Flat Roof Installation in Flower Mound, TX
Location
Flower Mound, Texas
This new home was designed and constructed from the ground up by RG+DB Architects. The Flower Mound residence is placed on the property to take advantage of its unique site topography with amazing views.
The project’s 4,900 sq. ft. GAF 60mil adhered TPO roof was designed with tapered ISO to shed water off this dead-level OSB roof deck. The upstairs gym has a walk-out balcony decked with IPE wood pavers and is surrounded by live bedding plants. This makes it the perfect outdoor space to take in the incredible vista of the lake and valley below. The two major types of challenges with this project were site access/staging and multiple wall roof planes that produced a very complex roof to detail and weatherproof.
We had limited direct site access and staging area due to the thirty-foot elevation change from the entry to the driveway path to the base of the home’s foundation. This single-vehicle width driveway was fully used for staging by the other trades for half the time we were installing the roof, so much of the time the roof crew on site there was a climb total of 50 vertical feet before the work day started.
The beautiful, but complex roof geometry is created by multiple roof planes. This was especially evident when the entry stairs ended at an Ipe wood entry bridge. This bridge tied into the pedestal-mounted Ipe wood deck tiles that were required to be level with the floor of the interior space. To add further complexity, the designer had that same Ipe deck tile area drain its watershed through the live vegetative roof growth media. The increased flow issue was resolved by providing redundant layers of drain mats and gravel paths to better move the water to the wall scuppers during high-volume rain events.
Despite the challenges, cooperation and excellent workmanship from all the trades involved with the project brought the Architect’s vision to life and produced an amazing home for the owners.
