IT'S SAFE TO SAY most contractors have good intentions and will even go out of their way not to cause damage to your roof. Sometimes damage is unintentional or result of lack of knowledge of the roofing system. Other times it's just a lack of common sense. In the next two minutes, I will give you example of all three.
- Unintentional - The tree guy. While tree removal services do their best to catch limbs and prevent them from falling on the roof, mistakes happen. If you have a lot of tree work done over your house, it would be a good idea to have a roofer take a look once they leave. Painters also fall in this category. If you have a two story house and painters have to stand on your roof to paint the second story, their repeated foot traffic can tear shingles or cause granule loss.
- Lack of knowledge - Electrical or satellite installers. Satellite dishes may be on their way out, but any type of roof attachment by non roofer can pose a threat to your roof. We have seen countless satellite dishes mounted directly on top of the shingles and then caulked crudely around the screws. This may hold for a few years but eventually it will need a special unit that layers into the shingles and elevates the attachment. If you're ever concerned, snap a picture of the install and we'll happily let you know they used the proper material.
- No Common Sense - An example that falls into this group is the Christmas light installers who decided to nail an undoubtedly breathtaking pattern of lights directly into the top of the shingles. After all, shingles are self healing right? Kind of like Wolverine? WRONG. It completely ruined the shingles and cost the homeowner a couple thousand bucks. Well, that's what you get when you hire a bunch of teenagers. Oops.
Most of the time contractors take care of your property, but sometimes the nature of their work, accidents, or lack of critical thinking can leave your roof a bit worse of wear. If you have any doubts or concerns after other contractors have been crawling around on your home, give us ca call for a free inspection.
Take care,
