Yes. Roofing is very expensive and messy, so why do it any more than you have to? The answer to that question is money. We should all put long-lasting roof products on our homes and buildings so we don’t have to do it again. But that means we have to spend a lot more money today and in North Texas, we have lots of hail that can damage anything if it is big enough. There are some roof materials that stand up to good-sized hail and truly last 50 to 100 years.
Here are the things to think about when considering a truly long-lasting roof system. Certain tiles may be too heavy for the structure of your home. Metal may not look good with the style of your home. Slate may be too heavy for the structure of your home and they are still susceptible to hail damage. Wood shingles are a fire hazard.
Today, certain synthetic tiles have proven to be lightweight enough to be installed on almost any home. These synthetic tiles stand up to hail and last a long, long time. They are more expensive than asphalt shingles but are absolutely cheaper in the long run. Polymer chemistry in the roofing industry has come a long way. (Sorry for the nerdiness.) My next roof will be a synthetic shingle!
